Registration
How do I register for a class?
If a course looks like it meets your needs, register online by clicking on the “Register Online Now” link next to the corresponding class in the Class Schedule section of our web site. This is a fast and efficient method for registering, and will result in an immediate email confirmation of your registration. Note: You must provide your own email address in the registration form to receive the confirmation.
What if a class is full? Is there a Waiting List
In order to maintain a reasonable facilitator/participant ratio, registration is limited. If a course is full at the time we receive your registration, we will contact you to see if you’d like to be placed on our waiting list in the event of a cancellation. You will be advised if a spot becomes available.
If we cannot fit you into the course, we will keep your name on the waiting list until the course is scheduled again. At that time, we will notify you of the new date. If you wish to re-register, you must confirm the new date by responding to us.
What if I’m interested in a class that isn't scheduled?
If there is a course you would like to take that is not scheduled, please contact us at: registrar@theworkforceinstitute.org . If there is enough interest in a particular course, we will schedule it for the future.
How much does tuition cost for Institute classes?
Fees vary according to individual training sessions, and for many classes there is a 3-tier pricing system. Please refer to the Current Class Schedule for the tuition pertaining to a particular session.
Maximum discounts are available for staff in Maryland’s Workforce Development System who work for the following organizations:
- Workforce Investment Boards (WIBs)
- Workforce Investment Areas (WIAs)
- One-Stop Career Centers
- Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation (DLLR), Office of Workforce Development
Other discounts are often available to members of the MWDA Professional Alliance.
Standard rate pricing applies to all other registrants not included above.
What does the cost include?
Unless otherwise indicated, tuition includes a Participant Manual, continental breakfast, lunch, and beverages.
How do I pay for my registration?
Payment may be made via personal check, business check, or by credit card (VISA and MasterCard). Please note that only credit card payments are accepted for on-line courses.
For classroom-based courses, you may choose to send payment with your registration, or elect to have us bill you or your organization. When you register, you will be given the opportunity to select the method of payment that you prefer (organizations that wish to be billed must make payment within 30 days of receiving the invoice).

Inclement Weather and Other Cancellations
What if I need to cancel my registration for a class?
Registered individuals must cancel at least 2 business days in advance to avoid a "no show" fee equal to the tuition fee. Substitutions may be made at any time for each day of scheduled training at no additional charge, however you must notify The Institute of the substitution being made by faxing a registration form with the updated information.
Does the Institute ever cancel classes?
Although we make every effort to conduct courses as scheduled, The Institute may from time to time be forced to cancel a course due to insufficient enrollment, bad weather, or other extenuating circumstances. If there is sufficient time to provide advanced notification, The Institute will contact you to advise you of the cancellation. In the event of unforeseen circumstances, you can check the status of a course by calling our office at 410-290-9072, and selecting extension 15.
What if the weather is bad—will a class still be held?
In the event of inclement weather, The Institute will follow the Howard County Public School system's policy for any classes scheduled at our Training Center in Columbia. If Howard County Public Schools are closed, The Institute will not have training that day. If Howard County Public Schools are delayed in opening, The Institute will conduct training as scheduled. Please check with local TV and radio stations to obtain this information.
For courses at other sites, please refer to the policy which appears on your confirmation letter.

Are classes customized to meet my needs?
The Institute develops courses based on needs expressed by professionals like yourself. In addition, The Institute can customize a program specific to your organization’s needs. See our Customized Training section for details.
Can I have The Institute deliver training at a location of my choice?
Yes, as part of its goal to make training as accessible as possible, The Institute can bring programming to your site through our customized training approach. It is often more cost-effective to have us come to you at a time and location that suits your organization.
General
What is the proper attire when attending an Institute class?
Normally, "business casual" attire is appropriate for The Institute training sessions. Because it is sometimes difficult to control the temperature in the various training facilities we use, it is advisable to bring along a sweater or light jacket for your comfort.
Where does The Institute hold its training classes?
Many of our classes are held at our training center in Columbia, MD. Based on the enrollment for a particular class, we may also conduct training at various sites in the Columbia area.
We’re also making an effort to hold training sessions at various geographic locations around the state to make them accessible to more people in those locations.
The location of each class is posted in the Current Class Schedule section, and includes a link to directions. In addition, the location is included in the email confirmation you receive upon registering for a class. Directions to training centers are also on this web site.
Please note: Use the directions included with the email confirmation or available through our web site rather than MapQuest or other map/direction programs. These are often incorrect, and will result in you becoming lost!
How do I become a trainer for The Institute?
Trainers are carefully selected based on subject matter expertise and training/facilitation skills. See the Trainers’ Corner section of the web site for details.
